iP1 HIGHLANDER PICKUP

iP1 SYSTEMS

Manufacturer's Notes
The iP-1 is currently in use by thousands of musicians including many of the world’s top players. Highlander’s Integrated Pickup and Matching Preamplifier set new standards for acoustic instrument reproduction. Our unique pickup installation couples the pickup with the body of the instrument. The pickup, being sensitive to pressure changes from all directions, 'hears' the tonal qualities of the wood and structure of the instrument, not just the dry, direct string sound through the saddle. The iP-1 was initially designed for use in six and twelve string acoustic guitars and nylon string acoustic guitars and basses, but various versions have been developed including systems for Resonator Guitars and Harp. The system has excellent feedback resistance and is packaged to take the rigors of the road.

MANUFCATURER'S NOTES
The Highlander pickup avoids the direct 'dry string sound' often associated with piezo pickups by embedding the pickup in a groove in the bottom of the saddle slot. Installing the pickup in this fashion couples the pickup to the bridge and the top of the guitar so that it responds to the tonal qualities of the wood and the structure of the instrument. Unlike other pickups our pickup is sensitive to vibration in every direction not just the 'straight down pressure' of the saddle. The complex movement of the top of the instrument is captured while maintaining contact with the saddle so that each note is clearly defined. In contrast with other piezo pickups the response of the Highlander pickup is smooth with a natural dynamic. This installation technique combined with exceptional frequency response accurately reproduces the subtlety as well as the full power of the instrument. A competent luthier or guitar repair person who has experience re-cutting saddle slots will have no difficulty making the groove for the pickup. Inexpensive installation tools are available from Highlander. The pickup is flexible, it's construction is similar to coaxial wire. The braid and the inner conductor are copper. Copper is malleable which helps with the pickup's overall ability to make intimate contact with the instrument and saddle. The material between the inner conductor and the outer braid generates a signal that is proportional to the vibrations that are produced by the instrument. This signal is carried by the inner conductor and the braid. The braid also shields the sensing material from electrical interference and noise. Humidity, temperature and age are just some of the factors that can cause an instrument to change its shape. The flexibility of the Highlander pickup enables it to move with the instrument. This ensures consistent high performance as the instrument 'breaths' and ages. Due to the pickup's high impedance, a well designed low noise 'matching preamplifier' is necessary to obtain the optimum results. Highlander pickups come wired to our specially designed 'matching preamplifier'. In a typical acoustic guitar installation, no soldering is required.

iP 2 DUAL SYSTEMS

Manufacturer's Notes
Combine the Highlander Pickup System with a second transducer, such as an internal, condenser microphone or a magnetic, sound hole pickup, and enhance your sound. (The mic or magnetic pickup is plugged into the Access Jack which provides power if required). The Signal from the iP-2 Pickup System is connected to the tip of the stereo output jack, while the signal from the second sound source is connected to the ring. Having both signals available separately, you can use different sound systems for each pickup or combine both signals with a stereo preamplifier or mixer such as our Pro Acoustic Mix DI .

SPLIT SADDLE OPTIONS
Highlander's 'Split Pickup' offers two pickups attached to an iP-1 or iP-2 preamplifier for use with guitars that have split saddles. In some instances our flexible standard pickup can be routed to fit a split saddle. For those instances where this is not possible, our split saddle option is the perfect solution. This is a very reliable, time tested system. Highlander Split Pickups that were installed in guitars over 12 years ago, sound as good today if not better than they did when they were first installed.

MICROPHONE OPTIONS
iP-2 Mic Adapters ensure optimum performance with a variety of microphones. A small PCB is installed in a miniature 3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug. The cable from the mic is connected to the PCB as indicated. As well as setting the optimum operating current for the mic capsule, Highlander's Mic Adapters help with the proximity effect by rolling off low end to reduce "boominess".

We can supply adapters for the following microphones:
* Joe Mills
* AKG 416B
* Audio Technica Pro95

VOLUME OPTIONS
A miniature, state-of-the-art, Conductive Plastic Pot comes pre-wired to the preamp with 2 feet (60cm) of cable so that it can be mounted conveniently (through a .25” (6.35mm) diameter hole). The iP-2 can be wired with two Volume Controls, one for the Pickup and one for the Highlander Internal Mic. Although the iP-2 can be used with a wide variety of microphones we can only provide a volume control for the Highlander Internal Mic. The Pot is 100K Audio. Our volume control is of the highest quality and sounds excellent at any volume setting however the best possible audio quality from any pot is realised when it is set at maximum volume.
